Well, the Ipad is a fantastic device. It is not a Laptop and not a replacement for a PC or MAC - at least for most people. However, if your computer use is limited to Internet browsing, Email, listening to music, watching videos and viewing photos, then this device is perfect. For these activities it just may be better than a Laptop. The Ipad is small and light with a beautiful touchscreen display and a large keyboard. The sound system is very good and earbuds or bluetooth headphones make it even better.

You can purchase the Ipad as a wireless WIFI only device or with the added 3G (no contract AT&T) cell network. Using the latter, allows Internet access when you are not within a WIFI Hotspot zone. There are no wired network LAN connections or USB ports on the Ipad - it must be used over WIFI or 3G.

What can you do with the Ipad? Almost everything you can do with a Laptop. It is a great reading device for books (Ibooks, Amazon Kindle books), Magazines (Zinio) and Newspapers (Press Display). Store and display your photos, play your music and audio books, watch tv, movies and podcasts and make free phone calls with VOIP. You can use Facebook and thousands of other inexpensive applications (apps) to enhance your experience.

There are a few limitations. The Ipad does not currently have native printing - however, this will be added with OS update 4.2, coming in November 2010. In addition, the Ipad does not run Flash enabled applications. This does cause issues with some Internet websites that use Adobe Flash.

Overall, Apple has a winner with the Ipad. If you are looking for a PC laptop or Macbook and don’t need a “full system”, check out the Ipad.

Panda Cloud Antivirus

If you have an older Windows computer you may want to take a look at Panda Cloud AntiVirus. It consists of a lightweight antivirus agent that is connected in real-time to PandaLabs' online Collective servers to protect faster against the newest malware variants. Since, it does not have to download virus signature updates (it uses a database in the cloud) it is very light and uses little memory and cpu. It is free for home use and is very effective in preventing malware infestation.

Windows 7

What about Windows 7? It is a great operating system and a substantial improvement over Vista. If you are using Windows XP and want to upgrade, just go out and buy a new computer with Windows 7. You may be able to do a fresh install of Win 7 on your older XP computer but frankly, it’s not worth the trouble. If you have a computer that is running Vista you can definitely do an OS upgrade, but I don’t recommend it. The best approach is to do a full install and start fresh. This takes a fair amount of work because you must save your data and reload all of your software, but the result will be a clean fast computer - it will run like a new one and you will have few issues in the future.

Alternative Browsers

Is Internet Explorer causing problems? Want to try a new browser? Check out some of the alternatives. If you want a very fast, lean browser check out Google Chrome. It is free and clearly faster than IE. On the other hand, Firefox lets you add extensions (small programs) to do just about anything you want. Both are great alternatives to the IE. However, if you like IE, be sure to update to Internet Explorer version 8.

Clean up your computer

Is your computer replete with useless files? It can be used along with traditional antivirus software like (Avast) to provide excellent protection. ThreatFire uses a behavioral analysis technique to look for malicious behavior. We have been using the old version (Avast Home 4.8) for several years and it does a great job with little impact on your system. The new version (Avast 5 Free) adds additional features and uses even less resources. Couple Avast with ThreatFire Free (more on ThreatFire later), along with Windows Firewall and a hardware router and you will have a very secure system.
